El Compadre "Tequila"

In Spanish the phrase "el compadre" means friend or buddy. El Compadre tequila is definitely a tequila worth sharing with your friends. With that being said, El Compadre is technically not a tequila, the word "tequila" does not appear on the label. The label description is "Licor de Agave" or in english an agave liquor.

Although chemically El Compadre is a tequila because it was not produced in one of the tequila production zones, it cannot be called a tequila. A huge advantage to not being labeled a tequila is the avoidance of domestic and export taxes associated with "tequila". As a result, El Compadre is extremely inexpensive making it very affordable for more of the average people in Mexico. You might find the 750 ml bottle as cheap as 45 - 50 pesos (about $2.50) and the 1 liter bottle for around 85 - 100 pesos (about $5.00).

But El Compadre isn't just a cheap tequila, it's also a very good tequila. Many tequilas can have a harsh taste that leaves many making that "tequila face" and biting into a lime. El Comparde is a nice tequila to sit and enjoy alone, no salt and no lime needed. It would also make a good margarita bringing the smooth flavor or the tequila into the drink.

Part of the reason for El Compadre's smoothness is the percentage of alcohol. El Compadre is 25% alcohol rather than the 35% - 38% for many other tequilas. The lower alcohol content makes for less burn as it's sipped and less bite in that margarita.

The big problem with El Compadre is that it isn't available in the U.S. These were brought back from Mexico. Yes, it can be a pain to bring tequila back across the border, but this is worth it. I imagine my compadres here in the States will appreciate it when I break out a bottle of El Compadre.

Nothing beats a really good bottle of Tequila! The smells that emit from a good Tequila is just as interesting, like a fine wine, it should be savored. My friend has been sharing 6 bottles bought in Mexico over 20 years ago. They are divine! Some retail for over $100 usd a bottle. Cheap tequila...meh....I'll pass.

Give it a try, you may be surprised.

I'm game to try it. Going to total wine today, I'll see if they have it.

Oops just saw it's not in the U.S. I guess I'm out of luck, darn it!

Nope, only available in Mexico. The Mexican groceries all carry an assortment of good tequila that is reasonably priced and some cheap ones. This is one of the good cheap ones. Maybe you should ask your local liquor store for it. Maybe if enough people ask, they will bring it up here.

Good idea. I've only been to a border town about 23 years ago, it is nothing but drug stores now from what I saw on Google maps street view. Too bad, because it was one of the safer border towns back then, and my teenage kids had a blast buying stuff.

Where I go most of the time is a small fishing village in the state of Yucatan. The Yucatan has less violent crime than almost all of the United States. Great place to relax and party since there are no public intoxication laws. All is good if your not causing trouble. The Policia have even watch us walk (stagger) home to make sure we got there safely.

Have a nice Spirit
