That's an interesting twist. I don't know if you intended it, but I found him kind of funny. It wasn't really a dark story, though in outline it could have been. But you told it with such a light touch I half expected him to be insane. My favorite line?

The humor was accidental, but then I took advantage of it. The main idea was for the protagonist himself to tell his misfortune in his own way. Thank you for reading and commenting
