What does Godless even mean?
The best thing about Netflix's Godless mini-series is that it understands and embraces the Western genre.
It's not just another period drama that happens to take place during that time-frame.
The cinematography gives us great landscapes of both the dry mid-West and actors' faces. The characters supply us with surprisingly intriguing and in-depth backstories. Jeff Daniels gives us a worthy antagonistic performance that is both menacing and empathetic. The plot keeps us on our toes and provides a distinct amount of 'oh shit!' moments that'll make you walk away thinking, "I'm surprised they did that" (in the best way possible.) And for the first time in a long time, a show gives us a closed storyline in just 7 episodes that isn't about jerking your chain for years to come but about executing what it is, and everything about it, with a distinct satisfaction.
Altered Carbon may be what people are talking about right now but Godless is where it's at.
