How To Disable Nvidia Game Experience Recording On Windows 10

If you have an Nvidia GPU, you probably also have the Nvidia Control Panel app installed, as well as the Nvidia Game Experience. Strictly speaking, you only need the Nvidia control panel app to manage your GPU. The Game Experience app isn’t needed to run games smoothly on your system. It does help keep drivers up to date where Windows update fails and that’s a pretty good reason to keep around. If you use Nvidia Game Experience, you know that it also comes with a recording tool that pops up when you tap the Alt+Z keyboard shortcut. If you prefer to use a different recording app, you can disable the Nvidia Game Experience recording feature without removing the app.

Disable Nvidia Game Experience Recording

Open the Nvidia Game Experience app and click the cog wheel button at the top. This will open the Settings panel for the app.

Scroll down and you will see a settings card for In-Game Overlay. This card has an option to turn off the overlay which will effectively turn off the recording feature.

This means that all the settings you see on the overlay will no longer be available including the Alt+F1 screenshot feature though you have plenty of alternatives to that on any Windows 10 PC. For example, if you’re playing a Steam game, you can use Steam’s built-in screenshot tool, or since we’re talking Windows 10, you can also use the Win+PrntScrn keyboard shortcut, or just Print Screen to capture your screen.

Additionally, some games have their own screenshot feature that is separate from the Steam and Windows feature. Not a lot of games do, but it’s worth checking if the one you’re playing happens to support it.

The Nvidia Game Experience app tries to do a lot but the fact is that most of its good or interesting features rely on games to support it, or better, more recent hardware to be present. If you’re running a slightly older Nvidia GPU, you can install the Game Experience app but you won’t get much out of it a part from the driver updates.

For screen recording and game screenshot features, it’s better to use Windows 10’s built-in features, or to find other alternative apps. OBS is reasonably good though it’s resource hungry and may not be able to run while you play a game if your hardware is too old.

There is no way to change the shortcut used to enable the overlay.
