A real thing. Used a LOT in the past. Much cheaper than a sword and more commonly used. Easy to make and very effective. The spike was used to penetrate armor. (both kinds). A war hammer could do damage to an 'armored up' knight which was resistant to blades.
Notice how small the hammer is? That's because it's real. Unlike hammers of fantasy, which would be impossible to use effectively .

Got to admit it looks awesome though.
A Club can do the job

Weapons are just tools that are optimized for killing.
