Apple is working on the echo problem for its AirPods 2

A patent newly granted to Apple shows that the technology giant is working to resolve the unpleasant echo effect you get when you speak using earphones. This addition could be welcome on the new generation of these earphones, the AirPods 2.

Technically named "occlusion effect", it is created (in part) by the sound of your voice that passes through your ear canal. As your voice resonates through the bones of your skull, the earphone tip blocks the output of your ear canal, turning it into a small echo chamber.

Apple is working on a new approach to solve this problem, which uses a valve system to allow the sound to move out of your ear canal, thereby mitigating the effect. The patent, discovered by AppleInsider, refers to the fact that there are two different types of earphones: those that block the ear canal and those that do not.

Although some models do not create occlusion effects, they will then let the ambient sound pass, potentially disrupting the user's audio experience.
