We all know to bridge the digital divide the only solution is the expansion of the internet across the globe. By 2020, 50 Billion devices will be connected to the internet.

To achieve such an expansion of internet it is very important for it to be energy friendly. And, to achieve this it is very important to use the current resources that we are blessed with in an effective and an efficient way.

This is where Li-Fi or Light Fidelity technology comes in the picture which is built on the premise of use of solar cells and LED. Li-Fi claims to be 100x times faster than the fastest available Wi-Fi we have currently in place. It is a promising technological invention in 5G visual light communication systems and the future of wireless Internet access.

Li-Fi concept

Li-Fi uses off the shelf LEDs to transmit data at an incredibly fast rate. Not only that, Li-Fi also makes sure that the data transferred is safe and secure. Data is transported by the light and is encoded in the changes of the brightness.

We already have many LEDs around us, so there is already a well-established infrastructure of Li-Fi transmitters. The data transmission happens in nano seconds so it is not visible to human eyes.

[Light] has created us, has created life, has created all the stuff of life. So it’s inherently safe to use. And wouldn’t it be great to use that for wireless communications?” - Haas in a 2011 Ted Talk.

How it works?

Check out this short video below to know how Li-Fi technology operates.

Can Li-Fi replace Wi-Fi?

Below is an infographic which highlights the pros and cons of Li-Fi.

Progress in Li-Fi technology space

  • Professor Harald Haas has founded a company named 'pureLifi'. The vision of the company is to be the world leader in Visible Light Communications technology space.
  • There are reports that indicate future iPhones will be loaded with Li-Fi capabilities.
  • UAE-based telecommunications provider 'Du' claimed to have successfully provided the internet, audio and video streaming over a Li-Fi connection.
  • A company named Velmenni is working on developing applications for airplane cabins.

Conclusion

The Li-Fi industry is set to become a $6 billion industry by 2018. I think that figure is enough to showcase the potential growth opportunity in the broadband industry. It's nice to see the innovations happening around a technology which is already considered to be the bread and butter of the future generations. One can only hope these technologies scale up and meet the growing customer expectations and demand.
