A skull robot has been developed for use in precise surgical procedures. Surgical procedures with the skull robot will be faster and safer.

Surgery with a skull robot
Cancer, cochlear implant, etc .. Due to various reasons every year, around 100,000 people need to open the skull around the world. Requiring a great deal of precision, this procedure obliges a surgeon to overcome a difficult procedure.

Researchers from Eindhoven University of Technology have developed a surgical robot to undertake this task. With less precision than millimeters, the robot can automatically and safely mill a cavity of the desired shape and size. In fact, we can say that this robot is a precision CNC machine with a seven-axis motion capability, a surgical drill.

For surgery, the neurosurgeon first examines the patient's CT scans. Afterwards, the operations requested by the surgeon are transferred as robotic commands. The robot, which starts the machining, drills holes in the skull in the desired shape and size.

Now, the robot that has passed the pre-tests successfully will be one of the most important surgeons in the future. However, this robot needs more time to be used in surgery. First of all, clinical tests that will start a year later have to be passed. Researchers say the robot can start the operation after five years.
