How does it work?

We have a different system of health care here - the government provides for hospital care, the Accident Compensation Commission (a government department) pays for any medical treatment you need if you have an accident - from cutting your finger with a bread knife, to falling off a mountain.

Doctors visits are subsidized if you are on a low income, and there is also private health care insurance that you can take out.

The public system is what you would expect - the care is ok, the wait times for all but emergency stuff is long, but on the plus side - it's free.

If you don't want to, or can't wait and you have insurance, you can get your treatment done right away - often in the same hospital.

So it's a mix of public and private care, that i think works well.
