Google X - Part 4 - Graduated Projects #3 - Google Glass
Of all the projects to come out of the X Lab, my favorite, by far, is Google Glass.
The original Glass was a "head mounted display" that a user could use like a smartphone in many ways. One could interact with it via voice commands or a small touchpad built into the side, and it also came equipped with a camera. It was first released in 2014 for $1500, making it unattainable by most people.
It was supposed to be an amazing new communication tool, and make everyone look like futuristic Dragon Ball characters with computers on their faces...
...but alas, the dream was not meant to be...
There were many concerns over safety and privacy, and many businesses banned their use. In 2015, it was announced that production of Glass was to be put on hold, and would continue in 2017. Sure enough, earlier this year, Glass 'Enterprise Edition' would soon be released!
The Enterprise Edition is all about making businesses operate smoother by giving workers a hands free device to help manage productivity. I see it as not much more than a rebranding, as most of the things they're taking about on their website could have been accomplished with the original, it's just not going to be a public product now.
Companies like DHL are already using it to speed up "order picking" in warehouses, and it's being used in many factories and complex assembly lines. The future will see Glass used in the medical field as well, and the long-term applications are almost limitless.
Glass stands to be one of those technologies that changes the way we think about the relationship between efficiency and productivity.
