Russian hackers are preparing to disrupt the European Parliament elections

One of the companies dealing with cybersecurity, two hacking groups connected to the Russian government, namely Fancy Bear and Sandworm, will be a big problem during the upcoming European elections.
FireEye, because those online security specialists are called, claim that Russian hackers are sending authentic-looking emails to politicians and officials to gain insight into government information. Both Fancy Bear and Sandworm are accused of working for the order of the Russian government, so it can be assumed that this administration is trying to obtain secret data for itself.

It is worth recalling that it is most likely APT28 (aka Fancy Bear) that is behind hacking in 2016 the National Convention of the Democratic Party in the United States, and Sandwarm is to be involved in last year's NotPetya ransomware attack on Ukrainian objects. FireEye notices that recently the actions of both groups seem to be coordinated, although each of them uses different methods - unfortunately, we did not find out whether there was any leakage of sensitive information.

According to one of the company's employees, Benjamin Read: - Groups may try to gain access to attacked networks in order to get information that will allow Russia to make political decisions from a better position or prepare for a data leak to compromise specific parties or candidates in the upcoming European elections.

Which scenario is more likely? Probably both, but the European Parliament elections are indeed a tasty morsel, because even 300 million citizens have to vote in them, who will decide on the future shape of the community. FireEye ensures that it informs the institutions at risk and advises them on specific actions, it is difficult to predict whether this will be enough, especially since the Russians already have experience in similar activities.
