Walmart To Use Face Recognition Technology In Stores | Why ? Let's Find Out
In short : Last year shopping mall Giant Walmart filed a patent application of a facial recognition technology that would be used during checkout. The purpose of this technology is to help Walmart to determine if their customer is unhappy and if they are an employ at checkout will speak the the customer and try to solve shopping related problems.
Walmart’s application abstract describes the goal of using face recognition technology to enhance client service, not simply within the moment, however in the long run. “The biometric information of a client could also be related to transaction information of the client so as to observe changes of the purchase habits of the client due to dissatisfaction. Changes in purchase habits, like loss of a client, could also be utilized in combination with the biometric information to determine thresholds of biometric information use to get client service actions.”

Walmart is hoping the technology, if applied, can enable it to hold onto existing customers, since doing so is way more cost effective than getting new ones. Management additionally envisions the technology as a tool it will use to reduce staffing cost. In the application, Walmart states that it can “be very costly to maintain enough workers to produce good client service. It can even be tough to establish an acceptable staffing level which will offer proper client service while not excess staffing.”
The use of face recognition is arguable because of privacy issues. The technology is being employed to reduce shoplifting by some retailers. In some cases, stores catching shoplifters have given them the choice of getting their faces scanned or being prosecuted. The scanned pictures go into a database that alerts security personnel after they enter a store. Approved employees will then tell the shoplifter that they have been black listed from in Walmart

Sounds more like Big Brother to me! Facial recognition can tell if a customer is not happy with the store when really it was because their kids were misbehaving, etc? Sounds weak. I could see the shoplifter facial recognition being useful though.
Yeah there can be many reasons to be unhappy but the staff will take care of only shopping related problems as far as shoplifting goes yeah that would be really good

This idea feels really creepy to me. I don't think I'd shop at stores that scan my face into some kind of database. Call me old fashioned, but I want businesses to have less data about me, not more!
