my quest for a plex media server

in #technology7 years ago

sweet jesus. look at this thing, it's like it's gonna flip over and start running towards you like a digital nomad spider or some shit. i went on a bit of a mission looking at a replacement nas system that i can run my flex media server all the time on and came across this, one of the latest beasts of the consumer routers you can buy. you wait until you see the specs on this bad boy, it's immense.

NETGEAR R9000-100EUS Nighthawk X10 AD7200 802.11ac/Ad Quad-Stream MU-MIMO Wi-Fi Router with 1.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor and Plex Media Server (Amazon Echo Enabled)

  • 802.11ac Quad Stream Wave2 WiFi plus 802.11ad WiFi - Up to 4600+1733+800 Mbps wireless speed
  • 60GHz 802.11ad WiFi - Fastest WiFi technology for instant downloads and backup
  • Plex Media Server - All your movie, TV show, music, video, and photo collections at your fingertips. Anywhere you go, on the devices you love.
  • High-Performance Active Antennas - Better WiFi coverage and faster speeds
  • Powerful 1.7GHz Quad Core Processor - Fastest processor for home router for better 4K streaming, VR gaming, surfing, or anything you throw at it
  • Requires a modem

i mean just look at it. it's a damn BEAST

i'd not even heard about or seen a mention of 802.11ad so that's a completely new one on me. i remember a time when wifi specs took years to come out and get approved but now we seem to be on a mission to get everyone connected, faster and faster and in real time. it feels like we are racing to an end thou not a beginning. oh and btw this thing is £350 gbp and you still need to get a modem for it for another £40 to hook up your adsl line!

we have some crazy kit out there today, i mean just look at that wave2 technology, quad streams across different bands, this thing will have no trouble sorting out all your wifi connected devices to run at lightspeed from whatever pipe connection you have coming in, perfect for a co-working space or even maybe one of our little apiary haus places? -- reminds me, i gotta post about that project too. i've got so many projects that are all heading into one goal right now. feels good.

the biggest thing here thou is that it has plex media server, that's huge, means i can hook up a NAS ethernet cabled drive and have all my content available to me anywhere via the plex cloud account, also means i don't have to power another box -- i like tech that has a multi purpose, makes so much sense seeing as the router would mostly be on at all times.

can you believe it's got a quad core 1.7ghz chip in it? i remember when we had those as master machines and this is just the router for the wifi internet! wow, more power, more spectrum, more everything! :)

This is Netgear's top line product in AC routers. Though to utilize its full potential you need AC supported devices (mobiles/laptops/tablets etc). It's a monster. My brother has it to cover his whole single family and back yard. It does its job pretty well. It's a Lambo in router's category. Enjoy its performance...

yeah it's a beast.

um.... LOL that thing makes me nervous.

just sayin...

exactly. these things are gonna be everywhere. bringing coffee to people and shit.

awww poor stumbly cute nightmare machine coffee bringer, possibly face huggers!
