Are We Really Entering the Age of Smell-o-vision?

in #technology8 years ago

Virtual reality headsets have immersed us into various games, media or experiences in the last handful of years. Just having the ability to freely look around within a fully 3-D field of view makes it seem much more realistic than staring at a TV screen sitting on a table. There are a lot of companies and projects working towards other ways to enhance virtual reality and media by connecting through non-audiovisual means but so far few are available to buy directly.

That's what makes it impressive to see that Olorama already have the equivalent of smell-o-vision for sale right now! As with any new technology, it is rather expensive so we won't see this in every home on the block any time soon. They have individual products of wireless smell diffusers, various scents and even a software kit to create your own smells, as well as various home theater packages. Their software synchronizes the smell-o-vision with your virtual reality or media devices to create the 4-D (?) experience.

There are competitors already for the new olfactory media industry and of course one of them has been developed by a porn (camgirl) based company. Camsoda.com also has it's product name [Ohroma](https://www.camsoda.com/products/ohroma/) for sale, which works by putting canisters into a gas mask device.
Now this device is targeted to a little difference group, so it doesn't sync up with a VR headset or Blueray player. It does have some more standard smells such as fragrances or environments, but there are some others that are more attune to their industry, body odor (and others) for example. You can see some of the more adult oriented scents [here](https://www.camsoda.com/products/ohroma/) on their website.

This product is available to directly buy it through their website. Not having to have the mask have the technology to sync up with other devices does let Ohroma keep it's prices down. The mask and 30 scents are currently being sold for $100 USD.

One last product to bring smells to our media is called VAQSO-VR and even though it's not been released yet (stated as Winter 2017,) it's worth mentioning. What makes VAQSO stand apart is that it is small enough to attach directly to any VR helmet. This keeps the scents it emits directly to you nose (versus having to fill a large room or area) and it travels with you. Their website hasn't gone live just yet, instead redirecting to a google document sign-up form.

There is quite a bit of investment already put into being better able to immerse ourselves in our movies, games or other experience. Devices are in the works to be able to enhance this further by incorporating some of our other senses to make things even more realistic. Am I the only one that sees these things finally culminating in a true Star Trek Holodeck?

It's such an amazing time to be alive when all of those sci-fi gadgets from before are finally becoming reality! Of all of the five senses though, I've always found smell as the least useful for me (maybe because I have such a weak nose!), so I'm on the fence with this one. This would be great for cooking shows though, it would really add a new dimension to the experience.

I totally understand you there! It was pretty fun looking for pics of 1950's or 60's views of future technology for this post.

I can see what you mean on the sense of smell being a little less impactful than senses, but in the end I'm sure they will all be tied together for the maximum immersion.

But having something like this would be pretty sweet for what you said...cooking shows. This should also provide aspects of taste, since it's the same chemistry, just on the tongue vs the nose.

If porn, then you can smell sweat, saliva and ass? Yuck...

Yea, I tried to skirt some of the specifics on that one so I could keep the post itself 'safe for work.' On that companies site they offered scents like "body odor," "panties" and "private parts."
Not exactly my tastes, but guess some people out there like it. Lol

I'll leave this here. Better or worse that porn? You decide. That John Waters, smh
