Elon Musk Guarantees to solve Southern Australia's Energy Blackouts within 100 Days or it's Free!

In response to recent blackouts in Southern Australia, the Head of Tesla's battery division said that they could solve their energy problems within 100 days of being asked. To achieve this Elon Musk's company would need to have 100 batteries each with 300 Megawatt/hour capacities not only produced and shipped, but also installed within this time frame.

The state of South Australia has suffered from blackouts since September last year, leading to a political spat over energy policy.

On March 10th, Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes responded to this article on Twitter asking how serious the Tesla company was about this. Elon Musk responded that he was serious enough about the 100 day time frame that if it isn't achieved that it would be FREE!

For some this may be perceived to be creating a black mark for some politicians. Quoting the Greens Party Leader, Richard Di Natale:

[T]he idea the transition to green renewable energy is a technological barrier is “nonsense”.
It’s a political barrier, it’s a failure of planning, it’s a failure of investment in the right parts of the grid[.]
-The Guardian

Only a day later, Musk was having with the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull an

in depth discussion about the value of storage and the future of the electricity system.

So we may see this project be applied to an even larger area, beyond Southern Australia, not long after the Prime Minister had declared national energy emergency last month. The Tesla CEO is able to be quite confident to deliver on this short deadline, as well as build trust from others, after achieving an 80 MWh battery farm last year in California in a 90 day time frame.

@mcannonbrookes $250/kWh at the pack level for 100MWh+ systems. Tesla is moving to fixed and open pricing and terms for all products.

My ex- Tara lives in SA and complained about this a lot when Facebooking on her PC! Love to see how it all goes??

I definitely hope it gets implemented and stabilizes power there. I'm by no means an expert, but in some reading for this it had looked like this has been a problem for a while between heat waves, bad storms and concerns with proposed power plant closures.

At least it seemed to get some good attention and moving rather quickly, especially compared to any project here in the US.

The Aussie Government has always been useless in that state, compared to say NSW or Qld. Nice to see the runt brother getting some US love :))

I'm with ya! I love following his projects. They're always amazing.

Gotta love Elon Musk's hubris. The man really knows how to get it done.
