Logitech G502 Proteus Review: The Gaming Mouse, Perfected
Spiritual Successor to the G400S
Logitech has long been my go-to mouse manufacturer since I got into PC gaming back in the mid-2000's. My all time favorite mouse was the Logitech G400S, which provided the perfect gaming experience in terms of movement, comfortability and ergonomics. It was a great mouse until the scroll wheel suddenly gave out after 4 years of use. Logitech has since released the G502 Proteus, which is a continuation of the older G-series line of mice and suffice to say, it's been a worthwhile transition.
You get three DPI settings to control right on the mouse, a precision button, two side buttons for shortcuts in-game and to use as forward/back in a browser, 4-directional scroll wheel support and the ability to switch between a quick scroll and hard scroll. This mouse is packing a ton when it comes to customizing it to your preferences. You're also easily able to adjust any and all shortcuts for specific programs or globally via the Logitech Gaming Software program, which is easy to use and intuitive enough for newcomers.
Fine tuning the mouse
You're also able to fine-tune the weight of the mouse with the included weights that are pictured above. If you're someone who needs a heavier mouse to get precise movements, loading the mouse up completely with weights is the way to go. It may not seem like it would add much in theory, but when you actually have the mouse, the weights give you a level of control I haven't seen before and add to the overall experience of using it in games.
While the Logitech G502 provides you with tons of customization options to tune your experience with the mouse, people with big hands may have difficulty using the mouse since it's on the smaller side. I have moderately big hands and while I can use the mouse fine, my ring finger and pinky sometimes end up on my mousepad instead of the mouse due to how compact the G502 is. While it doesn't impede me in-game, it's a minor inconvenience I wanted to throw out there.
Should you buy it?
Yes. If you're in the market for a new gaming mouse, the Logitech G502 Proteus provides an excellent experience that will leave you unable to go back to your old mouse. While the size of the G400S was a better fit for my hand, the level of fine tuning you can do with the G502 makes up for it and then some. Whether you use the mouse for gaming or productivity you'll get plenty of use out of the extra buttons, scroll wheel speed and weight adjustments provided with the mouse.
