Different types of panels in pc monitors

in #technology6 years ago

What inspired me to write this blog is the fact that I was unclear about what the pros and cons of each type of panel has. So here's what I've found out. Firstly, the different types of panels that you get are : TN (Twisted Plane), IPS (In Plane Switching), Super PLS (Plane to Line Switching), AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) and VA (Vertical Alignment).

Here are some more details of each type :

TN Panels : These panels are very cheap and affordable and are typically used for gaming because of the low response times that they provide (Response times range from 2ms to 5ms). This type of panel also allows for a fantastic refresh rates that range from 60Hz to 144Hz providing a smooth gaming experience. However, their colour accuracy is not the best and is the weak point of this type of panel. The viewing angles are also quite poor.

IPS Panels : Generally more expensive because of the high colour accuracy, excellent image quality and great viewing angles. The downside of this panel is that they generally don't offer a very high refresh rate and have slower response times ( ranging from 6ms to 16ms). There are some monitors with an IPS panel that do offer high refresh rates and faster response times but those monitors are typically much more expensive.

Super PLS Panels : These panels are produced by Samsung and are a derivation of IPS panels. They claimed to have better viewing angles, image quality and brightness for less money

AHVA Panels : Yet another IPS like panel produced by AUO. Although being similar to IPS, AHVA panels are faster but less colour accurate. Even though it is less colour accurate than IPS, the colours are still pretty decent.

VA Panels : This panel is in between an IPS and a TN panel. The colour accuracy is much better than that of a TN panel but not as good as an IPS panel. The viewing angles are also better and wider when compared to a TN panel. The downside of this panel is its response times which are worse than both the IPS and TN panels. So clearly not and ideal gaming monitor.
