What is megapixel ? Is megapixel was right way to compare or note the key spec of smartphone or any other camera ?

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

Today, I will describe about a very important specification of any smartphone.
When we think of buying a smartphone then we always notice a key spec ie. its Camera.

When we read or discuss about this key spec than we only noticed that how much megapixel camera this or that smartphone have !

Do you think ?

  • Is it right way to check this key spec ?

  • Is 5 megapixel camera was always worst than a 8 megapixel camera ?

  • Is 2 different smartphones have same camera performance if its price have a huge difference but its camera specs show same configuration ?

  • What is megapixel ?
Megapixels means million pixels and one million is equal to 10 lac pixels ie. 1 Megapixel camera will have 10 lac small pixels.

  • What is pixel and where were they located ?
All camera have a film at last behind all lenses as our eyes have retina at last. This film have certain numbers of pixel it was just arranged as its length and width and their multiple gave us total numbers pixel present on that film. This film is called sensor. These all pixels are present on that sensor.

Look at these images of sensor film fitted at backside on a camera.

  • What does these pixel do?
These pixels were capable to capture some detail or information of image. When we capture an image each pixel of that sensor captures light its colour, contrast and all information which was in front of its lens and store it.

  • What would we get by pixels ?
Now when these all pixels were gathered with each other they formed a image having large number of many small details by each pixels. Then camera finally store all details on our gallery. Yes, large number of pixels can capture more detailed image. When we zoom on a image with large number of pixels, then these pixels increases clearity of image.

  • Is only pixels were responsible to get a good image ?
No, having large number of pixels doesn't means that our image will have good quality. It is not only responsible to get a clear, sharp and actual image.

  • So, what is also responsible to get better image ?
If a camera have a big sensor then its pixel size will also increased and it emergents that more detail will be captured by a pixel then overall image will also more detailed as well as sharp.

(That implies if a camera have good lens and a big and good quality sensor than we can capture a better and clear image by a camera with less pixels.)

  • Now, let's know how megapixels effects

Firstly, know about resolution according to megapixel ?

1 MP : -
1152 × 864 was resolution of 1 MP camera.
Then 1152 × 864 will approx. equals to ten lac pixels, that's by it is called 1 MP camera.

2 MP : -
1600 × 1200 was resolution of 2 MP camera.
Then 1600 × 1200 will approx. equals to twenty lac pixels, that's by it is called 2 MP camera.

3.2 MP : -
2048 × 1536 was its resolution.
2048 × 1536 is approx. equal to 3.2 million pixels, that's by it is called 3.2 MP camera.

8 MP : -
3264 × 2448 was its resolution.
3264 × 2448 is approx. equal to 8 million pixels, that's by it is called 8 MP camera.

Have you noticed that as we increased from 1 megapixelpixel to 8 megapixel, density of pixel on sensor film was also increased.

Effect of increasing megapixels ?
It is depends upon sensor of camera. Let's take example of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s
Suppose, if both camera have same sensor but having 8 mp camera on iPhone6 and 12 mp camera on iPhone6s that means if sensor have same size or not changed than instead of 8 million pixels 12 million pixels were placed, that's means on same sensor instead of 8000000 pixels, 12000000 pixels were placed, due to which size of one pixel will be decreases and in result of this one pixel will capture less amount of details but it does not capture good amount of original light because small pixel size loses tendency to capture good light and our image quality will not enhance.

Conclusion : - Conclusion of all description was that camera was not only based on megapixels its lens and sensor also play a key role.
If we will purchase a smartphone camera having small sensor but have large number of pixels don't get clearity, original colours and sharpness.

Hoping, this post will help to compare or choose a better camera.
