Can you tell a smile from a veil? [New research to help your clinician and friendly AI avatar fool you.]

in #technology7 years ago

What makes a genuine smile look... well... genuine? In a world where nothing is left to chance, Helwig et al. set off on a mission to discover how to fake a genuine smile.

We created smile animations where we systematically manipulated the smile’s angle, extent, dental show, and dynamic symmetry. Then we asked a diverse sample of 802 participants to rate the smiles in terms of their effectiveness, genuineness, pleasantness, and perceived emotional intent.

The aim is to help train clinicians and artificial intelligence avatars in how to be human.

Nice smirk!

Apparently, the researchers were surprised to find that:

Our result regarding the optimal window (or sweet spot) of smile extent contradicts the principle that “more is always better” with respect to smile extent.

I thought that was funny! So these people had never considered that the big white toothy grin was the calling card of charlatans, politicians, sales sharks and fake celebrities? Oh well, at least they learnt something.

I am often disturbed by huge adverts showing people with mouth wide open in faux ecstasy; just look at the face without the surrounding context and I can't tell if they are in deep joy or utter pain. Is that just me?

However, for people whose natural facial expressions can best be described as minimalist, the deliberate baring of teeth in a vain attempt to transmit warmth or charm can seriously backfire. Many people thought such smiles were a sneer and showed contempt, or possibly even fear.

Thus, the interaction between dental show and the angle-extent parameters confirms the idea that individuals with limited facial movement should be encouraged to form closed-mouth smiles.

The conclusion is that if you can't give an honest smile, keep your mouth firmly shut.

Can you tell a smile from a veil?

One parameter this study did not look at is the expression of the eyes. As we humans know, much of the warmth of a genuine smile is not in the mouth (or teeth) but in the eyes. That's for another bit of research.

How about Blockchain powered AI services? I believe they could spot a smile even from a mile away.

That's the smile of a shark isn't it?

Yep! Steemian sharks!

I'd prefer an A3 tablet!

Ohh good

Imagine if AI bots are already among us!

They are - they just don't know it yet.

Rycharde.. transferring funds out to bittrax for example- are you doing sbd-bittrex-btc or sbd-steem (internal exchange)then steem to bittrex-btc?

I should have had this for my article How to improve your smile. I will drop a link for this in the comments section of that one and consider using it for a future blog post I am likely to
write on the subject.
