Often times, mothers in their quest for an easier way of doing their chores have settled for the mechanical way out and the dishwahing technology is one of such mechanized way of easing our chores.

A dish washer is a machine used for washing dishes. It was invented by Josephine Cochrane, a socialist who was tired of having servants break her dishes.

About the inventor (Josephine Cochrane) :

She was born March 8th 1839 in Ashtabula county, Ohio, to the Garish family. She was brought up in Valparaiso, Indiana where she schooled and her dad Irene Garish Ransom was a civil engineer . She married a prosperous dry goods merchant who was also a Democratic Party politician (William Cochran) on October 13th 1858. This union was blessed with two kids (Hallie and Katharine Cochran) who later died.

Her quest for this inventory:

Josephine and her husband later moved into a mansion and when there was the need for parties, she organized dinner parties using Heirloom China dishes.

In some of those dinner parties organized by Josephine Cochran, her servants had broken her dishes, which made her to seek for a safer and faster alternative.

Also, her desire to relieve housewives and mothers from the stress of having to wash dishes after meals made her to go for this invention.

Similarly, the death of her husband in 1883, the pile of debt he left behind with just a little cash motivated her to go through her invention.

After his death, Josephine kept William's last name (Cochran) but added the letter 'e' to it.

Meanwhile other attempts at producing a commercially viable dishwasher had been made; the likes of Joel Houghton (1850) and L.A Alexander (1860) but none of these was effective.

However Josephine Cochrane in 1887 designed her first model dishwasher in the shed behind her house, ably assisted by a mechanic (George Butters) who was an employee in the first dishwasher factory.
She started by:

1.) Measuring the dishes

2.) Built wired compactments to fit each dish.

3.) she placed the compactments inside a wheel.

4.) Laid it flat inside a copper boiler and a motor turned the wheel.

5.) Hot soapy water is poured from the bottom of the boiler, into the dishes.

However this dishwasher was the first to use water instead of scrubbers.

Meanwhile on December 28th 1886 she was granted recognition for her invention and it was unveiled at the World's Columbian exposition in Chicago (1893) where it bagged awards for the best mechanical construction, thereby spreading the news and Josephine Cochrane started getting orders for her dishwashing machine from hotels and restaurants.

Conclusion

This invention paved way for the production of other sophisticated dishwashers now in circulation. As such, Josephine chochrane is considered the inventor of this modern technology.

Mums and wives out there, you would all agree with me that every house needs a dishwasher, especially for working class mums like me.
