Do you use GMAIL? If so, you need to know this!

Gmail does not recognize "." (dot) when relaying the emails. For example, if your email is [email protected] and if there is another gmail ID called [email protected], then your emails, subscriptions, notifications are going to [email protected]

I have first hand experience with this as I started getting emails of someone else. I have been gently pushing back to the mailing lists letting them (and the original intended email owner) know of the issue. However, it got to a point where I cannot do it any longer and have started sending these into spam.

That is when I thought - I should let at least few people aware of this issue through this blog.

Google's help page itself sheds light on this issue with an example:

If the sender added or removed dots from your email address, the message will still go to your inbox. Your email address is unique; people can't set up an identical account even with a different number or placement of dots.

For example, messages sent to these addresses will go to the same Gmail account:

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
If you still think the message was meant for someone else, contact the sender to let them know they mistyped the email address.

Note: If you use Gmail through work, school, or other organization (like yourdomain.com or yourschool.edu), adding dots to your username changes your email address. To change the dots in your username, contact your admin.

If you have a "." in your gmail address, chances are, someone else may have been getting your emails.

Be aware!

According to you which one is most secure .I have upvoted your post .I have a plan you follow me and I'll follow yo

Most secure is NOT having dots...

If there was someone else with a GMail ID of "johnsmith", Google would not let you create an account with the ID "John.Smith". So, it is impossible that someone else gets your emails.

That is not true...if it were, Google wouldn't give out example showing the email examples AND the fact that I keep receiving emails that are clearly sent to john.smith where my email has no . is a proof!

From Official Gmail Blog:

Insert one or several dots (".") anywhere in your email address. Gmail doesn't recognize periods as characters in addresses -- we just ignore them. For example, you could tell people your address was [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]. (We understand that there has been some confusion about this in the past, but to settle it once and for all, you can indeed receive mail at all the variations with dots.)

yes, it ignores . but it let you create accounts, that is the issue, we know it sends the email to ALL emails with and without the dots (".")....

No, it is not Google letting you create accounts. I just tried creating versions of my addresses and nothing was allowed. I got this message: Someone already has that username. Note that we ignore periods and capitalization in usernames. Try another?

Instead Websites and services allow creating different accounts using the same e-mail, but with dots placed on different places.

Ideally a Website should strip down the dots and check whether there is already a [email protected] when someone tries to create account with [email protected].
