With renewable energy exploding, these countries have taken the initiative to move towards a low-carbon future.

Denmark: 55%

Denmark was a pioneer in the wind industry, and today many of the best innovations in the field come from Denmark. Meanwhile, Denmark has pushed fast towards a renewable future. Wind lead the pack, producing 42% of the overall energy. Bio and waste energy contributes the majority of the remaining renewable production.

Austria: 78%

Austria is in the midst of a big push to renewable energy. Currently, 78% of electricity comes from renewable sources. Of that, 60% was hydropower. 8% was wind power, and 2% was solar power. Another 8% was waste/bio. Solar and wind are likely higher, since the information was only dated to 2014.

Sweden: 55%

Sweden is one of the few countries with an almost entirely low-carbon electricity infrastructure, as they also rely heavily on nuclear. 44% of power used by Sweden is hydropower, with wind adding another 11% as well. Sweden has a goal of achieving 100% renewable by 2040, for which they are on target.

Costa Rica: 98%

Costa Rica was almost entirely renewable. The majority of it came from hydro, but around 11% came from wind power as well. Costa Rica would very well use no fossil fuels in 2017 for electricity.

Scotland: 26%

Scotland recently made headlines for producing more than all their household needs with just wind power. Scotland is home to enormous wind resources, with enough power to supply the whole country several times over.
