Brand New Processors, should you invest in one?

in #technology7 years ago

AMD and Intel are the biggest competitors when it comes to Processors. AMD unveiled their new processor, the "ThreadRipper" last month. The Processor has up to 16 Cores or 32 Threads which is really good, but I wouldn't say it is for the regular consumer. It is packed with potential but I don't think it is for the normal computer user. I am a huge AMD and Intel fan, I like all of their processors but after what Intel has done, I think AMD is on my good. Intel has released their "Intel Core i9", which is something very similar to the AMD Threadripper. Like how said above, this processor is not for the regular consumer, AMD claims that it is the "First Powerful Consumer Processor". The only i9 processor they have showed us so far is the Intel Core i9-7900X which is part of the X-Series or the Extreme Processor line. According to Intel ARK, the i9-7900X comes with 10 Cores and 20 Threads. Nothing compared to the Threadripper. But still, the i9-7900X is not for the regular consumer. I would say these type of processors are for CPU intensive games and for people who need high processing power. The i9-7900X is rated at 3.30 GHZ and has a turbo host to 4.30 GHZ. It supports Intel's new technology called "Intel Optane Memory" which is something similar to a SSD but speeds up your Hard Drive. Since these processors have so much potential, the price will be very high. An exact price for the Threadripper is not known but it is going to be over $1000. Leaked info from WCCF Tech says that the price of the i9-7900X will be $999. Now, should you buy a Threadripper or a i9 Chip? My answer is if you want to have a extreme, high performing computer, then these Processors will be the one for you.

They may be super fast and come with all the bells and whistles, but in reality who needs all that speed? Any modern i7 does the job just fine for me.

Yeah, I run on a AMD FX right now and it serves me well for programming and gaming but I guess we will see how much these brand new processors impressus!

Yeah, I must admit that AMD Ryzen was quite impressive. So very curious to see what those new processors can do.
