PSA - Don't Upgrade to iOS 11 Before Checking a Couple Things

in #technology7 years ago

Apple released iOS 11 yesterday and it's loaded with great new features but before you upgrade make sure these couple items don't apply to you!

1. Make sure you don't have any old apps on your device.

In iOS 11 only 64bit apps are supported. That means that if you have an app on your phone that you use regularly that is a 32bit app, it's not going to work for you anymore and you'll lose any data you have in the app.

For example, I have some old apps that I use to track my car mileage and gym workouts. These apps have pretty much been abandoned on the app store and haven't been updated in a long time. At this point I'm not updating my phone until I make sure I have all of the data I need off of my device and backed up where I can access it.

The good news is that most popular and new apps will be fine. So, how do you check for old apps. Grab your phone and go to:

Settings>General>About>Applications

Once there you'll see a list of every app on your phone that will no longer work once you upgrade to iOS 11.

Work around:
Unforuntalely there isn't much you can do. You can try to reach out to the app developer to encourage them to update their app but other than that, you're hosed. Just make sure you get any important data off your phone before upgrading else it'll be gone forever!

Here's a screenshot of my long list of no longer compatible apps.

2. If you have an Outlook.com or Office 365 email account, it may break.

The other issue to be aware of before upgrading is that there is currently a bug in the iOS 11 software that results in you not being able to send out emails when using the Mail app.

This only applies to some, not all, Outlook.com and Office 365 email accounts.

Apple and Microsoft are aware of the issue and are looking to a fix but it's not available yet.

Work around:
You could always just login using a web browser or you could download and use the Outlook app. In either case hopefully either would be just a temporary solution that you wouldn't have to deal with for to long. My guess is they're working hard on a fix and it'll likely come pretty quick.

Good luck with your update! Hope you enjoy all the cool new stuff in iOS 11, I'll be posting some of my favorite features as I come across them.

If you know of any other gotcha's, post in the comments to share.

Thanks for the tip on old version applications. I tend to slack when it comes to updating stuff, and it would have been pretty awful to lose all the data from those apps!
