Samsung has begun the mass production of the world's largest solid state drive (SSD). It has a 2.5 inch package and holds 30.72 terabytes.

Called the PM1643, the drive combines 32 new 1TB NAND flash sticks. The flash sticks have 16 layers of 512 Gb V-NAND chips.

The use of NAND technology started in 2016 and the industry is currently adapting to manufacturing from planar to the more dense 3D manufacturing. Planar NAND has one layer of memory cells where the 3D NAND stacks cells on top on one another.

NAND flash offers faster erase and write times and it offers lower cost per bit than hard drives but it is slower that ROM or RAM chips. The NAND is shock resistant, it is able to withstand high and low temperatures and is somewhat water resistant.
