KNOWING THE BENCH VICE... WITH HD IMAGES!
Knowing that there is almost no workshop where you won't find a vice, I took pictures of a bench vice in the workshop at my institution and decided to educate people on what it is.
So, today on ‘Engineering photography’, we are going to be learning about the bench vice.
The bench vice
The bench vice is a holding device usually attached to a workbench and has two jaws for holding workpiece firmly in place (stationary). It is designed with a cast iron body and is basically a simple device to use.
Let’s look at the parts!
The jaws
The jaws of the bench vice are what hold workpiece firmly. There is a face jaw which is the stationary jaw. It is the left jaw in the image below... and the sliding jaw which is the jaw that moves to and fro for tightening effect. It is on the right side.
The handle
The handle controls the to and fro movement of the sliding jaw. Turning it is pretty easy. The direction of turn determines the movement of the sliding jaw. It is designed with steel to prevent breakage resulting from tightening.
The base
The base of the vice is the carrier. It is the part of the vice that has to be screwed firmly to the worktable. A base that is not firm could result in an accident especially when machine filing is done. Cutting could go wrong if the vice were to move out of position.
So, that’s basically about what the bench vice is!

Tell me if this was educating. Thanks.Resteem to enlighten.
Here’s a previous post I also did on ‘Engineering photography’.

Reminds me of the workshop in the comprehensive school I went to as a child. Largely a waste of time in my case.
