Dubai's police force is known for their police patrol sport cars including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti and Nissan GTR, and now they are expanding their troops with fully robotized police officer.

World's first robotic police officer officialy joined troops on May 21st, on 4th Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference (GISEC).

It is around 170 cm high and weights around 100 kg. It can speak 6 languages for providing information to tourists. It will be used for transmitting live footage to operations room. With the inbuilt cameras it can recognize facial expressions, hands gestures from 1.5 m away and identify suspects wanted by police.

Robot is packed with latest technology, allowing him to automatically map the area or building he is in and navigate through it. It was designed by the Dubai police, with assistance from IBM’s Watson and Google.

Its main purpose will be to assist citizens and tourists with quick access to all police services and inquires or reporting a crime and requesting help with a press of SOS button.

"Robots and autonomous machines are shaping and redefining our future and transforming the way we function. Technological advancements are enabling robots to talk, see, feel and react to objects and humans. The age of the robots is no longer coming - it has arrived," (Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Exhibitions & Events Management, DWTC)

I think that the new inovation will greatly improve already high level of safety in the streets and bring the availability of police services to public even closer. What is your opinion?

Of course Dubai is first one again :) that is a big step although it will probably take some time for people to accept it. I am interested to see if and how it will improve the safety. Dubai seemed pretty safe to me when I was there in February. Looking forward to see more interesting news from Dubai!

World's first robotic police officer is cool , I would like to check my passport with it. Smart police officer @noperope

Oh. My. God. This is soooooo scary! Shockes me quite a bit to see this is almost reality now. I will not imagine future with this robocorpses and Artificial Intelligence. AI will be developed more and more and with greed and bribery it will be a real danger for humanity.

I agree with you @tabea, future is scarry, a lot of things can go wrong because we can't predict everything. But then again, to which kind is the bribery aplicable? Human officers or preprogrammed artificial inteligence?

A really, really good question. This is opening the horizon again! Even AI will have a competition and different opinions between them. What a creepy future ahead.

Why creepy @tabea? because it is something new? I bet that in 1800 when the first car was invented they thought it is creepy. But we got used to them quite well :)

Yes - it is so totally human to be superstititious about new inventions.
And yes, the selfdriving cars are creepy too lol

Scary

Do you want Skynet? Because this is how you get Skynet! I personally am against AI telling people what to do, theoretically it always get promoted in the good way but at the end police troops are not there to protect the 'people' their purpose is only to protect the government, companies and multi-nationals. This are just the first steps but where will the government draw the line? Wake up people we don't want computers and robots decide over us, what is next secret intelligence pre-crime from an AI stored in a huge building somewhere in the middle of nowhere ?

@pandapoef I agree with you but then again, what is CCTV system in all the big cities? It is the same system without the added value. This one is doing the same, I agree but at the same time it is bringing you services, when you need it. It is not gonna bother you if you are enjoing your cup of coffe outside. But if something goes wrong, you have an option to solve it.

This is a good view point. I agree with you on this. If we see them more like service and not enforcement than I don't see a problem. But when people hear word ,,police'' they make a step back. But when there is emergency situation everybody start screaming: call 911 ! , call Police!

Exactly. And it is not gonna be used as enforcement. If it would be a robot firefighter, everyone would like it, and it is the same thing at the end. Bringing service availability closer to the people.

Ha it's interesting to see how this will turn out in the future.

"Thank you for your Cooperation"

Wow. I guess we should not be surprised if one day Terminator (the movie) becomes a reality! Scary.....

Dubai government is actually planning to increase the number of robots to 25% of all police forces untill 2030.

I can't imagine walking on the streets with robots but it's happening!

You can't look at them as the robots we know from the movies. It is more of an info and service point, moving around in the buisy areas.

Just thinking....what would we need to put down those "robocops" in case this idea spreads around? Paraffin and lighter?

probabbly a click of a button would be enaugh :) I am sure that it has all the necessary security measurements in place.
