Firefox 67: new rendering engine, improvements in private mode and crypto-blocking
We are going to tell you what are the news of Firefox 67, the new version of the browser launched today officially by Mozilla. The main novelties are two, the beginning of the implementation for some users of the new rendering engine that the company has been preparing since 2016, and the improvement of the private mode by deactivating the extensions by default.
Currently, the update has begun to be displayed among all users, although it may still take a while for it to arrive automatically. Even so, go by visiting the About Firefox option in the Help menu to update it throughout today.
Performance improvements with WebRender
The main novelty of this new version of the browser is the start of the arrival of the WebRender rendering engine, which has been getting ready since 2016. However, the engine will not be implemented for everyone, and only 5% of users will see it activated. Why? Because at the moment it will only reach users with Windows 10 and nVidia graphics card.
For the rest of users, it will play waiting for future updates. As for its improvements, the engine will also use the graphics (GPU) in addition to the CPU to improve the fluidity of the processing of the contents of the websites. This will make all Firefox render better, although you will have to test it thoroughly to see how much you notice the difference.
More security for the private mode
The other great novelty of the new version of Firefox 67 is that private browsing is improved by preventing extensions from compromising it. Therefore, no extension you have will run by default when you are in private mode, and you will have to configure it to allow certain extensions to run.
To do this, in the Firefox extension manager that you access in about: addons has added the possibility of modifying the preferences of each one that you have installed individually. So, you can choose which ones you trust and which ones you do not want to interfere with the privacy of the private browsing mode.
No uploads in the screenshots
Mozilla has also made changes in the screenshot function of its browser. You can still do them, but they have decided to eliminate the function that allowed you to upload to the network. Even so, in your menu you will still find the option to store them locally on your computer's hard drive.
Blocking the mining of cryptocurrencies
Firefox has implemented blocking functions since its version 63, and in 67 have added two new ones to block the mining of cryptocurrencies and Fingerprinting, which is what is called the tracking of your navigation without the need for cookies, only with the data that offers your browser. This blocking is done automatically on the websites you visit.
The downside is that they are options that are not activated by default, so to take action you will have to go to the page about: preferences # Firefox privacy, and there look for the option to block content and choose the strict or customized protection options.
