As some of you may have known, on May 8th-10th, 2018 Google was hosting the Google IO 2018. It’s an event where Google announced new changes / initiatives / products. At the Google IO 2018, Google announced Android P or Android 9.x.x Public Beta version. You can read all the new features with a quick google search. At this article, let see the most interesting and impactful of the new features you can expect to find at the upcoming Android P.

1. Full screen (no button) navigation system

With the rise of full-screen and almost bezel-less smartphones, the new Android P has prepared itself with a gesture-based navigation system. Afterall, if there is no button, the current Android navigation system will be useless. For better or worse, many people will not argue that the Android P gesture-based navigation system is very similar to the iOS gesture-based navigation system. Below are some of the said navigation system:
  • Tap: go to the home screen
  • Long press: launch Google Assistant
  • Half swipe up: go to the overview screen
  • Full swipe up: go to app drawer
  • Slide to right: scroll through recent apps
  • Back button: go back (only appears inside apps)

2. Indoor positioning detection

Android P now supports the Indoor Positioning with Wi-Fi RTT IEEE 802.11mc Wi-Fi protocol, which is also known as Wi-Fi Round-Trip-Time (RTT)e. This function will enable your smartphone to detect it’s position indoor to better serve you in GPS for finding your favorite store or better yet, will boost your Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality / Mixed Reality experiences. The immediate implementation of this is the new AR navigation on Google Maps that you can enjoy directly.

3. HDR video support

Android P now supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) VP9 Profile 2. This means you can shoot HDR videos if your smartphone supports it. Your “emergency” smartphone based videos will have better quality.

4. Deep integration of AI & ML

Unlike the previous version of Android where the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) facilities are only implemented on Google Assistant, Android P will also integrate AI & ML inside its core OS. The direct implementation of this is the “smarter” application search and categorizing system to help you access your commonly used application faster.

5. AI & ML-based battery saver system

Another implementation of AI & ML on Android P is the new battery saver system. Android P will learn your comfortable screen brightness level along with the resources used by applications, such as the GPS or Bluetooth. All these data will then help the Android P to automatically set the system for the best battery usage.

Conclusion

Of course, there are other new features that Android P brings. However, these five (5) new features could be the most impactful features that represent the future of smartphones. What do you think about these features? Which feature you like the most? Do you have another “must-have” new features from Android P?
