What is Net Neutrality?

Right now your internet is like a road that in order to gain access to all you have to do is pay a fee at a toll gate which is like your ISP and your internet speed just depends on the car you drive, the more expensive it is, the faster it is. Once you pass the toll gate there is no other fee for you to pay nor is there a speed limit, no matter where you go. This is how your ISP manages data traffic under the laws of net neutrality.

What would it be like without Net Neutrality?

Without laws of net neutrality, your ISP could do various types of things. They could put speed limits on roads that lead to certain places, charge you more so that you can drive on faster lanes when going to certain places, put trackers on your cars, prevent you from entering certain places, charge you a fee for entering certain places, and one of the worst things that could happen is, if you have a start-up, they could charge you a fee that if you do not pay, they could not only slow down the road that leads to your start-up but prevent anyone from going there, and the list of things that they can do goes on and on.

So why is Net Neutrality being challenged?

Can you imagine roads without speed limits? It could be chaotic! Behind the scenes, under the laws of net neutrality, your ISP is spending a lot of money to manage the traffic. So without net neutrality, internet service providers would pass the costs, that comes with managing bandwidth, to the companies that it's headed to. So all major companies like Google, Amazon and Netflix obviously are totally for net neutrality and if they refuse to pay for this, then the picture above could very much become a reality. So in short, internet service providers would be able to make a lot more money without net neutrality.

I feel net neutrality laws are important, they give opportunities to smaller companies and prevent internet service providers from manipulating what we are able to see on the internet. Let me know what your feelings of net neutrality are in the comments section below, are you for or against it?
