How many text messages are too many?

Text messages are a faster and silent ways of communication. We can pass relevant information to people who are at a far distance or places that prohibit phone calls. Other people are usually reactive and would find an absolute limit of messages a nuisance. Studies have shown that most peers have widely used text messages to communicate with their friends. Not all people enjoy texting, and some find it inconveniencing since you have to type every letter in the message to convert your thoughts into a written language. Phone calls seem to be a faster way of communication among the elderly since texting may appear to be more fun. However, the young people prefer texts as a faster way of communication, and they can discuss their secrets too without anyone listening to them. An argument arises on the number of text messages that is considered to be too many.

Sending a text message depends on the person you are talking to and the topic under discussion. The way you text your closest friend may not be the same way you will talk to your parents or relatives. You will also communicate in a different way if it is somebody of a higher status or age group. Text messages are considered to be too many especially when you are communication with a more senior member of staff. The message to be sent is usually formal and requires a brief explanation on what you intend to pass across. In this context, more than twenty messages can be considered to be many in a day since you have to be brief in your explanations. Once the message is understood, then the conversation comes to an end.

It might be different when communicating to your closest friend because you tend to have much under discussion. Your way of communication is also informal, and you will always send several texts explaining your daily experiences or talking about past events. You tend to keep in touch every time wanting to know how your friend is fairing on and what they are doing. In this context, the number of text messages in a day can be higher, and one person can end up sending more than three hundred messages. However, the range between eight hundred to one thousand messages can be termed as many.

Other situations may arise in the case of arguments or a topic under heated discussion. There may be a situation where several people are communicating at once, and they tend to send text messages to anyone they know well. You may end up sending more texts because you are talking to different people in a day and each one of them is explaining a different situation. The number of text messages, in this case, can be higher than communicating with a single friend. You may even spend a whole day arguing and fail to reach a conclusion. However, some may fail to know the number of messages they send during the confusion, and it may be as much as eight hundred texts having talked to many people at the same time. Others will become tired and save the discussion for another day as they cannot reach an agreement. The number of text messages can be considered to be many depending on the person you are talking to and the topic being discussed.

It all depends on whose texting me and what they are sending. 👍🏽

I agree with you, Ken. Thanks for commenting!

Most of the time I clearly prefer to receive text than a call. The reasons are:

  • I can answer when I have time to do it. A phone call requires immediate attention (or otherwise is lost). It interrupts whatever I am doing in this moment.
  • Surprised from and unprepared for a phone call it can happen that I talk "nonsense" because I have not enough time to think before I answer (or at least I feel a pressure not to think too long). Answering to a text I decide myself how long I think before I press the reply button (that doesn't mean I never write "nonsense" as well :-).
  • I can read the text again if I forgot any detail.
  • One can attach files to the text.
