BREAKING NEWS - Full Self-Driving is Here: All Tesla Cars Now Autonomous

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

Elon Musk was quite mysterious about what he had to announce today, saying in previous interviews as far several months back that Tesla would make the "obvious move" and leaving the media and consumers to speculate at what he meant. After all, obvious for Elon Musk isn't necessarily obvious for the public at large.

Today, the mystery is solved. Moments ago Elon announced that all Tesla vehicles manufactured from now on would be capable of full autonomous driving. The announcement had been previously delayed by a few days so that film could be made of the new vehicles navigating through complex urban environments.

Before you start worrying about several-ton Roombas bumping into people, buildings, and.. well... everything, note that Tesla promises that the cars will be "substantially safer" than human drivers.

Equipped with eight surround cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors with 360 degree vision, it's not too hard to believe.

The cars can be bought as of this moment, but though the hardware will all be there drivers will have to wait for upcoming updates as the software is released bit by bit and more data is gathered by drivers on the road.

Nah, I'd rather have control over the vehicle i'm in. An autonomous vehicle wouldn't break ANY traffic laws. I would be late to work every day.

Lol. Maybe. But imagine a car that could drive at 100 mph with a fatality rate lower than humans have driving at 60. We're still a ways away, but that's where it's headed with any luck.

I dunno. I think I'd prefer the convenience more often than not. I could get a lot of writing done on the road if I didn't have to worry about watching it constantly. So long as it's an optional feature, like cruise control, I'm all for it.

Totally, 100%, agreed. The amount of time saved, the safety gained... Heck, you could even go out drinking and for once not have to worry about safety. The new possibilities are substantial for productivity and lives saved.

Time to build JohnnyCab!

Lol. Nice reference!
