Data Privacy and Security Concerns

in #technology8 years ago

The ever changing Information and Communication industry… I love it so much.

Just think if we had to do the same thing every day and there was no change to our daily routines. I have seen a few articles, where people are referring to the sheep in the sense that they follow government regulations and just accept everything. For me a sheep is a person who is stuck in a corporate organisation and just moving up the ranks :) By the way I am one of those :) Bah !

During the past few years there has been a very interesting phenomena in the digital world which I think we are all aware off, but do not really take notice.

I am referring to the amount of data that is being created everywhere in the world today and every day.

I have been in the Enterprise information management industry for the past few years and I have seen first-hand how data is growing at a speed which one will struggle to comprehend. If we look at one of the larger EIM implementations that I were involved in, I think I can show you just how quickly data can grow. The organisation has 200 000 employees across 6 continents in 64 countries. Let's do the math and keep It simple:
200 000 Employees create 1 document per day of 1 MB each.

That is 200 000 MB or 2 TB per day. Obviously there are individuals which creates larger documents so it quickly spins out of control. Especially due to the fact that the data created is not in databases, so it is unstructured data, which means it becomes more difficult to manage.

More and more devices

If the above example, and you take the number of companies in the world creating data, we are very quickly into many Terabytes, or even Petabytes (1000 Terabytes). That is just companies. If we bring individuals into the equation, we are speaking many Petabytes, and guess what? People do not like to get rid of their data. They just buy more storage. Think about your Pictures, music and video's. We like to collect :) The graph below shows how much data is being created vs the rate that the price of storage came down over the last few years.

Evolution of the data platform

When we look at the diagram below, we can see how the industry has changed over the years. Big Data is now the thing to mine or no, actually crypto should be mined not data :)

Data is moving from something you use outside the workstream to becoming a part of the business app itself.
It’s how the new knowledge worker is actually performing their job.

As data explode, security concerns explode as well

This is where the blockchain will solve many problems and play a major role in data going forward.

The following was notable data privacy debates in our more recent times.

In the tangible world, physical limitations prevent the broad abuse of the law...
Should the same laws automatically apply to the digital world where a few lines of code can unlock someone’s entire life?
ADAM GHETTI, FOUNDER & CEO OF IONIC SECURITY, 2016

I love following the ITC industry, new developments, changes and alterations on how the world is adopting to these technologies. This is one of the main reasons that I am looking into blockchain and crypto technologies at this stage. I thoroughly believe that it will play a major part in all of our lives who is currently on the Steemit platform.

More importantly the blockchain will be a major part of every person's lifes even though they are not aware that the underlying technology of the whole internet changed onto a blockchain. The difference is that we will now what it is all about :)

Happy Steeming

Good post. You would probably be interested in my article pertaining to security in relation to Steem blockchain development:
Steem Tools Development - Centralized Steemit.com vs. Decentralized App Center (Security Concerns)

Thank you @timcliff great article. I will check out Steemian as well. It looks like it's been in development for quite some time.

i wish more of the general public actually cared!

Great article, just reminded me why I'm not on facebook, twitter or reddit. Then again that didn't help my steemit network starting from scratch ;-)
