That is one possible outcome in the very long term.
However there is another possibility which, in my mind, is equally if not more likely.
I think that humans will keep on enhancing their body with biological engineering.
Gene therapy is only the start. Who knows how we will be able to alter our DNA a hundred years from now?
Maybe we will be able to construct at will bio-engineered organs and limbs superior to our current ones?
What about stopping the ageing process? Or maybe even reversing it?
All of these possibilities don't seem to me so far fetched.
We might also live with cybernetic implants such as radio transmitters, extra sensors, etc.
Scary!
Yes, this trend will surely increase in the coming years and decades. But long term there is no comparison between biological and bionic. Bionic have much more potential over the long term.
And I don't find this scary actually, I find this exciting :)
