How long do you usually stay in traffic when using your car ?

This is the question that Elon musk asked himself last december and quote
Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging...

His idea is to start a 3d network of routes to heavily reduce traffic.

"But why is this not already done ? We built subways etc right ?"

The reason is simple : boring is slow (a snail is 14 times faster) and extremely expensive up to 1 billion per mile depending on the project.

So Elon Musk set himself to reduce the cost by a factor of 10 (cost/10) and the increase the speed to beat the snail. so he founded the boring company

This company not only aims to improve digging. It have a vision. As we say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

That's the idea :

• A network of tunnels underground
• Easy access in and out
• Travel via electric sleds so the travel is efficient as possible (no human errors)
• Very fast travel that is electric (eco-friendly)
• Public transportation integrated

The main problem with building more roads to reduce traffic is that more roads only lead to more traffic wired article about it

Which is true but we can never match the demand for more roads because the surface area is very limited. But underground we have A LOT of space. To give you an idea the earth crust is 30km/18.6 miles to 50km/31 miles. We could easily beat the demand. And have most of the traffic going underground leaving the city quieter and cleaner.

Most importantly you would be going at 200 km/h / 124 mph, on the video it seems not that much since it's all the cars are going the same speed. But here is how it really is to travel at 200 km/h :

Can you imagine going at 200 km/h in a city ? and you can do whatever you want while waiting for the sled to deposit you to your location instead or being stuck in traffic.

Sounds awesome right ? If this project delivers it would completely change the way se see cities : less surface roads (we could change them to parks, buildings,pedestrian spaces etc), less sounds, faster transportation, greener cities : if you travel via the tunnels in an ICE car you won't create harmful gases since you travel on an electric sled.
