While the article is accurate at the intended level of depth, and the recent discussion about the not-quite-backdoor in WhatsApp is accurately described as well, it is not mentioned that due to the app's closed-source-black-box nature it can inject a backdoor anytime if you're an unperson.
It is somewhat disappointing that in these days and age of short attention span among the apparent target audience of teens that the actual alternatives beyond Signal are not shown and explained, nor is the important concept of federation or decentralization introduced.
Very good article, @herzmeister. Unfortunately, even Signal does have its issues as it heavily relies on the Google Play Store and can't be installed outside this golden cage. I usually opt for "Conversations", which is a very nice (completely free) Jabber-based messenger which can be installed using F-Droid.
yes, thanks, that was what i was referring to in the last section. Maybe I should have mentioned XMPP+OMEMO, Tox, and my current recommendation, Riot/Matrix.

Decentralisation and security.... It is these very basics, that are the most important elements of Steemit and yet seem to be the hardest to communicate/market.
