To my own thinking, ideally at least, we should be using petroleum for chemicals and aviation fuel, natural gas for motor vehicle fuel, thorium for electricity, and possibly LENR if they ever get that totally together.

Coal is the most major thing which can keep us alive until we get to that sort of a point.

I view the quest for fusion power as basically hare-brained, always thirty years and thirty trillion dollars away.
