AirCarbon™ - Made from Carbon Capture

in #technology9 years ago

600 Billion pounds of plastic is produced by humans in a year and the surprising fact about producing this much amount of plastic is its manufacturing produces nearly 3 times Carbon Dioxide(By weight) as actual plastic. Mark Herrema, CEO of Newlight Technologies says that's an insane amount of pollution. The main motive of Newlight company is to sequester carbon emissions from plastic manufacturing. It will not only help in reducing air pollution but also help in the optimised use of resources.

How Plastic is made?

Conventionally, The manufacturing of plastic involves, hydrocarbons obtained from fossil fuels to undergo extreme conditions like very high pressure and energy. Newlight built their first commercial plant in California, United States which captures Methane (CH4) generated by a dairy farm’s wastes and this collected methane is transported to a bioreactor, where enzymes react with gas (including air) and form a polymer(plastic). The plastic so formed is called AirCarbon.

AirCarbon is very identical to a plastic material and have all the properties of any other oil-based plastic. It costs less as compared to a typical plastic therefore it can be one of the reason for the next market driven solution to control global warming by controlling Carbon Dioxide(CO2).

Several Companies including Dell computer packaging, Sprint Smartphone cases, Kl desk chairs(as shown in the above photo) has already signed on using AirCarbon. As AirCarbon meets the performance and stress requirement for a wide range of applications and products, it can be a big step forward in making our world a better place.
