Immersive TV: Will It Steal Your Soul?

A TV experience that can ask you, "Are you feeling lucky, punk?"

Here in the digital age, the rate of technological change sure advances quickly. Remember Pay-Phones? Remember the super-fast 56k modem? How about VHS? Most of us, if not all of us probably have a smartphone no more than three years old and an HD TV no more than 5 years old.

It seems, most things tech are going to get another bump soon. Augmented Reality and VR are two of the newest things out. It’s hard to say if one of these technologies will come to dominate the other and how they will advance. They are in a way a harbinger of what else is coming.

Augmented Reality is frankly enough for me. Right now, it is much better suited for an active lifestyle and who knows what can happen. With Pokemon Go!, some people had a once in a lifetime experience gaming with augmented reality. Koffing, a Pokemon who attacks with poisonous gas was seen around the D.C. Holocaust Museum. Rattata’s, a rat like Pocket Monster was seen in and around Auschwitz.

As Augmented Reality is on a phone, it may not have the staying power of a dedicated VR Unit. I may have been the last one to learn this but, VR Units are in the stores. Best Buy carries some type of VR Unit.

Personally, I don't like it. It seems like it would be bad for your eyes and probably shuts most of the outside world out. At this point, it is probably pretty ant-social. Unless it has applications to improve real-world skills, (which I'm sure one day it will) I don't want it.

I believe that there are also mental health considerations for VR Technology, and I'm not just talking about autism. There are already issues from time to time with video game related murders and psychosis. While it is a highly and hotly debated subject as to whether the particular gamer or the game is really the to blame, a synergy seems most logical. Kids are probably going to get a rash or acne on their faces in the shape of the VR headgear as it gets dirty too. Watch out for those kids...

Immersive Television is being developed by numerous companies and from several approaches. Microsoft, Ericson, and Stanford sponsored by Sony, Intel and Interval are some of the groups and companies working on it. The project at Stanford is called Stanford Immersive Television Project and has been going since the late 90s.

For Indra, their vision is "The Television Of The Future Makes The Viewer Part Of The Content."

They seem intent on using three screens, most likely three of your walls combined with a technology similar too but trumping the technology in the above video. It will basically be another kind of virtual reality.

I am sure there are absolutely no chances of abuse from hackers, the government, those conducting marketing research or "internet of things" integrations. There will definitely not be any issues with this technology and children, the unstable, the elderly or just a Chicano who breaks into your home. Somebody may or may not have made the Microsoft Video above into a fappenning video. If you accidentally click on a trap cam whore, traps will still be gay, don't think they won't be. Never, under any circumstances walk around in your TV room naked.

This is going to be worse than the time that guy had bad mushrooms at the planetarium and they had to call the police.

The Vid Screens from Minority Report will probably all be reality soon. This one seems to be the closest analog
