Items for a Computer Crash Cart in a bag

in #technology8 years ago

Hey Steemit friends,

At my day job, we are deploying servers in locations where we don't have crash carts. What's a crash cart? It's a Keyboard, and Monitor that you hook up to a server when it's failed so that you can (maybe) bring it back to life.

So, in the event of a server failure, I'd rather not lug a full size monitor, full size keyboard and then try and find a power outlet available when and if it comes time to fix the server.

I've come up with these items and ordered them and tried them out. They worked great for this purpose.

The main item you need is a monitor. I ordered this 7" field monitor - http://amzn.to/2EkjLfv ... It has several good features, it's good enough resolution, it runs off of batteries, it has a vga and hdmi input. It's small and that's good for portability. It's small, and kind of hard to read the tiny writing on the screen. It's definitely good enough for this purpose but I wouldn't want to type a research paper on it.

These are the batteries that I got for the monitor and they seemed to work great: http://amzn.to/2noWjFL

Then there's the keyboard: http://amzn.to/2GsqwfN

It's small enough, but is a full complement of keys. Some of the small keyboards I looked at lacked a F11 key, and there's several times where the ESXi install program requires an F11 and F12, so F1-F10 isn't good enough.

Then the other ingredient is a CD/DVD external drive. It used to be that servers had DVD drives, but the somewhat lately thing to do is not have an optical drive and to make the form factors smaller like 1U servers. We have a bunch of the HP servers and I had trouble getting it to boot off of a USB thumb drive, so I tried a DVD drive and it worked great. Here's the one I picked up. http://amzn.to/2GKaSwI

The only down side is it needs 2 USB ports, one for the data and another to power it. This may or may not work for you depending on the number of USB ports your server might have.

All of these items fit in a small bag. I'm going to have that bag ready for when I find out one of my servers goes down. Hopefully, like all of my ready bags, I won't have to use it. What you you think, steemit friends? Do you have a crash cart for your servers? Anything else I should put in the bag?
