Techno- Report #49 - meet Festo - BionicFlyingFox
The technology of this new millennium does not stop surprising us, the objective is to make our life easier and try to emulate the best possible to real life, today I will present you a project that will leave it with the open mouth, it is a bionic flying fox which can imitate the flight of this bird, accompany me to know some of the fascinating characteristics of this robot.
This flying object was developed by bionic learning network who spent 5 long years designing different prototypes in which they implemented the latest in electronics and robotics to give the ability to fly, this ultralight flying object can fly almost automatically in a given space.
Among so many birds they decided to use the flying fox as an inspiration because it is one of the few mammals that can fly, the membrane that covers its wings gives it elasticity and is light enough to allow it to fly pleasantly with an impressive aerodynamic capacity.
Its wingspan is 228 cm while the body is 87cm, BionicFlyingFox weighs around 580, the appearance is identical to that of the flying fox, many wonder how it can fly, this is due to the study of its aerodynamics, as well as the main aspects and qualities of its tissues and bone compound, in this way they could find similar materials offered by the technological field today.
Among the materials that compose this artificial robotic bird is the super thin and ultra-light membrane, but at the same time robust and strong, its elaboration is made with two hermetic films adding the knitted elastane fabric, it is as if they were welded by about 45,000 points, this fabric has the capacity to regenerate itself with friction, and it is very rare that it tears so that it allows the bionic bird to stay in the air without major effort.
This robot bird can fly thanks to a motion tracking system, which plans the route in which the bird will fly, in addition to following the exact position, the bird can land manually, but can perform some tasks independently, is expected in the future to provide the bionic bird with a complex system of artificial intelligence that allows greater independence, have also thought about installing solar energy so that the bird has greater autonomy in the air.
In the meantime, this flying fox will have to fly assisted thanks to two infrared cameras on the ground that track the infrared markers found on the wings and legs. Perhaps in addition to flying the bird which I find amazing, the most striking advancement is the air-ground tracking control. Because it allows the bionic bird to learn more about the environment achieving a better trajectory in the site that is.
The algorithms generated by the bird are expected to be used to study the possibility of new means of transport that are more efficient and comfortable for humans, also little by little with the artificial intelligence and the help of the algorithms the BionicFlyingFox every day learns new challenges that will register, improve the ability to fly and learning.
BionicFlyingFox reminds me of remote-controlled birds used in some airports to scare away flocks of birds such as geese, ducks, in areas of air traffic, this in order to reduce the impact on aircraft engines, I have also thought about a future with a diversity of birds and insects robots.
