Politeness, Do nice guys really finish last?

Comments on social media don't come naturally to everyone.

Politeness

"Polite Wikipedia editors are more likely to achieve high status through elections, but, once elevated, they become less polite"

A project by a team at Cornell University aims to identify linguistic aspects of politeness. They have built an app that can check text for politeness. Try it out at http://politeness.cornell.edu/

Steemit

How do you think this applies to Steemit. Do authors with lots of Rep get less polite?
What are your pet peevs here? Put them into the politeness app and see does it work.

Wouldn't it be cool if a politeness indicator could be built into steemit as you type.

Thank you for reading this. I write on Steemit about Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, Travel and lots of random topics.

I don't know about you but I'd much prefer politeness to be organic, rather than engineered in a bid to promote success.

Warning: Comment has not met optimum politeness level for maximal upvoting potential.
Do you wish to post anyway?

I don't think politeness leads to finishing last. There are authors here that publish articles that can be controversial. However, I believe that these viewpoints only aim at stimulating a debate not a fight.

In general here on Steemit, it seems like it is better to be positive than negative. This may be because there is an economic incentive here to do so.
A lot people are normally looking for upvotes. If someone left a mean or uncivil comment, the chances of them being upvoted by the original author and others are much lower.

People here are remarkably civil especially when compared other public social media. It's rare to see personal attacks against others which is amazing to see in social media. It remains to be see if something like that would continue if the economic incentive was removed.

Personally, though, I actually enjoy it as I think this politeness actually leads to having more meaningful discussions that involve making more logical arguments than personal attacks.

If you focus on the negative at the outset of a conversation, battle lines get drawn and discussion becomes very difficult. Its interesting that the economic model and incentive may be the glue that makes Steemit a place for meaningful discussion.

Politeness officer =)

Well I have always been thought it cost's nothing to be nice. So true for Steem!!

But it is hard to have a debate and continue to imply the same amount of politeness.

Very cool idea, interesting post !! thanks for sharing ! will follow you ! STEEM ON !!!

Steem on!

very nice i also beleive on humbleness politeness and courtesy and Jesus also give the same lessons to us and by this post related with politeness i just remember these things i also work on the same things rite now thats why i commented

Maybe they can develop an algorithm for humbleness and courtesy too :)

Courtesy is needed in creating a content, especially as you say "disrespectful comments" that would be fatal to everyone.

The system is designed so that these "disrespectful comments" won't last long. People would get downvoted and lose incentive to be on the platform. I guess they might do damage before this happened.

That's a useful little app. I'm not here long enough to comment on whether of not a writer's politeness tends to diminish as his rep increases, but I have noticed a few people with a high rep who are less than polite in their answers to comments.

I think the people on Steemit with higher rep are in general really nice and I don't think the same applies as does on Wikipedia, yet.

Is that really something to be believed?
Let's have a check, test my politeness on this :D

Let's have a look (;
