YouTube Unveils A Number Of New Product Tweaks

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

Youtube has been having a difficult time with the ongoing uproar over their advertisement strategies and recent approach to dealing with “offensive content” on their site. They've been working to try and implement a solution and that's been by demonetizing many videos, which has upset a number of the content makers who are responsible for creating content that brings people to the site in the first place.

But there is a wide variety of material available on Youtube, so despite their crackdown, millions of people still visit the site everyday and watch countless hours of comedy, cat videos, food channels, and more. It's estimated that at least 1.5 billion people log in to the site every day to watch videos. They are still the most used streaming service in the world at the moment.

However, a number of advertisers (allegedly around 5 percent) have just this year decided to part ways with Youtube over their view of the company's inability to efficiently deal with the issue for many of what's deemed to be "problematic content". Facebook and Google are also said to be losing hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising because of the same issue over troublesome content.

When it comes to user-generated platforms, brands are finding that sometimes their advertisements might end up next to content that they don't like or wouldn't want to voluntarily be associated with, and so they've had to reconsider their marketing approach.

It's a difficult situation for Youtube, because they make millions from these advertisements but they also don't want to alienate their content creators, who are responsible for bringing millions of people to the site on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, a number of popular 'Youtubers' have expressed deep concern for the apparent crackdown, labeling the efforts of Youtube as a wave of censorship. Some of the biggest Youtube channels have seen a major drop in viewership over the past year, said to be a result of the site's changing algorithms.

Youtube at the moment is said to be struggling with a major brand issue.

They need to find a way to keep advertisers happy and also the content creators who provide the material that makes the advertisers want to come around to the site in the first place. If enough people get frustrated with Youtube then it won't be long before it follows the same fate as other sites, and gets left in the dust for the competition.

Aside from their algorithm adjustments and strategies to crackdown on content, Youtube also just announced this week that they are going to be partnering with Lenovo and other tech companies in order to bring to market a new technology that's referred to as the VR180 camera. The technology will allow Youtube viewers to watch 180 videos, making VR content easy to create. And content creators will still be able to film their videos using the regular equipment that they use now.

But they will also be looking to manufacture cameras that specifically support the VR180 technology. They expect the first cameras to hit the market shelves by Christmas later this year.

They also announced recent changes about how users of the mobile app for the site will be able to re-size videos that they are watching on the site, by adjusting the square to fit horizontally or stretch vertically. This way it makes it more convenient for the content creators who might be filming a Snapchat or something else, to post content that can be viewed in more customized ways so that the viewer can enjoy it.

Another change that will happen for the US customers in a few weeks, will be how people can go about sharing their favorite videos on the site. Instead of clicking the share button now like they do, it'll instead be fashioned similar to Instagram's where users can privately send and share a video with friends or someone in a private message, rather than post onto just a site.

Day late and dollar short. As a YT content creator, my biggest complaint hasn't been the advertising revenues or even the censorship (although I have been the victim of this idiocy), my biggest complaint is the limit of access to my subscribers. When new content is released, my subs are not all notified...EVEN IF THEY HAVE CLICKED ON THAT STUPID BELL! (Why should they have to click the bell anyway...its like they have to sub twice!) They don't show the content because there are channels and programming (Youtube Red, Youtube TV and certain channels) the folks at Youtube prefer people watch.

DONE!

Right now, I'm only using YT as a host for my vids until something better comes along like SteemQ. Then, I'm pulling my vids and uploading them there.

yes this was another issue I saw mentioned a few times...You would think if 100 (or x amount of users) have subd to the channel.. then that content should be sent out to every single one of them? 👍

Yeah you'd think...But the market will decide what it wants and right now YT might be in trouble.

Never Knew that SteemQ was coming to the market. If this happens then YouTube can definitely predict a drop in content creators and viewers. This is a perfect time for getting in on the ground floor of new ideas that will eventually control the video marketing platform. This is definitely a new trend that can't be ignored. I didn't take the time to understand the value of Cryptocurrency and now look what's happening. I'm keeping my eye opened.

Me too. I'm very hopeful that SteemQ will allow us to upload video content.

Interesting. I have all but abandoned YouTube in favor of Steemit . . I'm enjoying it much better here so far. Although, since coming here, my YouTube page kinda looks like . . .

F... Youtube!... Waiting for decentralized video platform to arrive and kill youtube forever...

How about Steemq?

hope it comes around eventually :)

I REALLy think a youtube expose on yoou is neccisary to REALLy help steemit grow!!

u are one of these stemit ords who is helpng everyone by begoong engaged and if the world KNEW aboutyoou you would gain SOO any more fllowers!

YouTube is an established brand and I don't see it going anywhere. It is owned by Google and will get bigger. Nobody will challenge it any time soon

i've closed my channel on youtube and moved to steemit

only a matter of time before more do i suspect :)

They need to find a way to keep advertisers happy and also the content creators who provide the material that makes the advertisers want to come around to the site in the first place.

That is a delicate rub between the two parties. I had not heard the full story of what was going on.

I can see both sides but it feels like YouTube is beginning to lose their edge as people desire censorship free options.

It will be interesting what happens with Steemit's YouTube style channel once it is launched. I have a feeling the Youtuber exodus to Steemit will only accelerate.

well i don't see it as censorship when Youtube allows them to still post their content, they aren't stopping them from posting their videos they just don't want to automatically include those videos in their advertiser $ program, and given the consent of the advertisers which should also be respected just as the content creators should, I could understand the issue on both sides. Their approach to choosing what gets monetized and what doesn't, doesn't really make much sense nor seem to be applied evenly. Seeing as it doesn't get applied fairly, I can understand why the content creators view the action as censorship. Waiting for steemitvid to takeover! :)

You're right, censorship is an odd word to use in this case - glad you added more detail here.

I know a lot of content creators were facing their first business crisis with the monetization changes. The language between the two parties would have more emotional triggers involved - to paraphrase what Clif High would say.

Come on SteemitVid!

Youtube stepping up, this VR stuff is so exiting, Thanks for sharing going to follow for more

I've heard about a lot of issues with YouTube as of recent from a few of the people that I am subscribed to. We will see how YouTube can rebound or if another platform will start taking creators away from them.
