Is A Foldable iPhone Coming Soon?

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

A new report suggests that Apple, along with other tech giants like Google and Microsoft, is looking to partner with LG Display in order to develop and use foldable display technology. Specifically, it's said that Apple wants to introduce a foldable display for the iPhone. And we might not just see these foldable displays for iPhones but for other smartphones and tablets.

Samsung Display is rumored to be the one who will supply the majority of the OLED screens for iPhones that are coming next year, and they are the screens that are expected to be curved. But after that, possibly in 2018, it's said that Samsung and LG will battle for Apple orders. LG has shown off impressive foldable display technology in the past, and so it will be interesting to see how that develops for the coming products that we might see unveiled next year and thereafter.

LG won't only be producing the new screens for Apple but they'll allegedly be making them for other companies as well. If they start to incorporate graphene into their screen technology, then we might really start to see some revolutionary designs in the market.

Apple is expected to release at least 3 distinct models in 2017

Apple reported more than $75 billion in revenue for just 3 months, ending in Dec 2015 and they've sold hundreds of millions of iPhones around the world. And although there are still many more android phones that are sold, the iPhone is still one of the biggest players in the market. Apple is still looked at as a greater status symbol to many and even android users have reported the iPhone being more popular than their own model.

The new iPhone that is expected to have a curved display, being released next year, isn't the first phone to market with such technology, but it will definitely pave the way for further interest in this area to have such features incorporated into the screen/display technology for various devices. It is expected that both the Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 8 are going to have the curved screen technology.

Not sure as to what efficiencies does a foldable phone has. Cool nevertheless.

Apple isn't innovating enough. They crushed it with the iPod and the iPhone and once the slab design caught on, Apple kind of topped out and the rest of the phone producers just kept pumping quality. Truth be told, Apple has been fighting a losing battle for a lot longer than I realized. HOWEVER, their ecosystem (connection between phone, laptop, watch, desktop, and now car) is really well thought out. The Achilles heel may be home integrations. Because most of them are Google-based (not necessarily Mac or PC) and Android/Microsoft are already much more well-integrated, Apple really needs to do a solid re-think. Great post. Hope that they start innovating again.
