Google Launches New Program To Help Publishers Target Malicious Comments Online

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

Looking to target toxic comments online, just this week, Google's parent company launched a new technology that is apparently going to be able to help news organizations and various online platforms to be able to identify/target abusive comments online.

The new technology, known as Perspective, is going to be able to review any comments on the page and then score those comments based on how similar they are to comments which have been deemed toxic or likely to make someone leave a conversation.

So far, the technology has already been tested with the New York Times and they are hoping that they will be able to extend it to other news sites as well like The Economist and The Guardian.

These news organizations say that they want to encourage engagement with readers, including discussion, and they want to target and cast out any comments that are trolling/abusive. But sifting through those thousands of comments takes a lot of time and money etc, and that's why some sites have just opted to end comments altogether.

But for those who are still looking for a solution, they've turned to this program to do it for them.

The Perspective program has examined and sifted through thousands of comments and it has allegedly learned how to spot worrisome comments by being able to recognize potentially abusive language that's being used in the comment.

The technology might even make its way to social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, after it gets perfected by the news sites.

And the more that people's comments are targeted by this and feeling like they lack the platform to express their views and engage in a discussion, the more they are going to go looking elsewhere for an alternative. Steemit will be there for them.

Yes, yes yes. Every time they try to control/coerce/manipulate they will fall on their face not long after. Transparency is bulletproof, let the people discriminate what is good and what is bad, patronizing the masses will always backfire.
Google loves telling us what to think.
