Domino's Plans To Use Robots To Deliver Pizza In Germany

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

In New Zealand, Dominos has already started testing out drones in order to deliver pizza. And now in Germany they are also looking to use sidewalk robots to get the job done.

The Starship Technologies sidewalk robots are already approved and operational in a number of different areas. These robot delivery machines can travel about 4 miles per hour and they can make deliveries within a 5 mile radius. They've been tested in a variety of countries: the UK, throughout the US, and more.

It's estimated that their sidewalk robots have already served over half a million people around the world, traveling hundreds of thousands of kilometers.

Now the robots will be working with Domino's in order to deliver pizzas in Hamburg, Germany.

They'll be starting up within the next couple of months on moving forward with the initiative. It's clear that these sidewalk robots have already proved efficient and successful in various circumstances, seeing as they are moving forward and parting with a big corporation like Domino's now.

For now though, those in Germany who want to order a pizza and have it delivered by the robot, will have to live within a mile radius of that Domino's location.

And the company does have plans to grow this initiative over the next several years. They need more delivery drivers to get their product to their customers, drones and robots help to meet that need for them.

Aside from partnering with Starship Technologies, Domino's has even ventured to create their own version of the sidewalk robot. They unveiled their design for that last year; they started its development back in 2015. They've been testing the bot in New Zealand and it has already been successful in making deliveries.

Wow... the future really IS now. One can but hope these robots are better at finding addresses than some of the human delivery people who sometimes seem to get lost!

lol! this gave me a good laugh!:) i hope so too haha

I read about this Starship company before. Love to go Hamburg to try this but won't have any chance. Perhaps, I can get Starship to come to Singapore and start operations and I can be their CEO here or something. :-)

are you in the UK? or the US? i think maybe they have it in Singapore too, maybe not? cant find anything on it so might be mistaken! but i know singapore is great for trying to endorse a lot of the new technology with driving cars and flying taxis etc! .. i haven't tried one yet.. def want to though! lol

I'm in Singapore. We have Dominoes Pizza but not heard anything about this. The autonomous car trial I know about are one in a industrial area one-north and gardens by the bay. there's also optimus prime, i mean driverless truck coming. google for - driverless truck port singapore
you may find another topic to research and write about and I can upvote that too :-)

So say good bye to tipping for pizza delivery???

Yeah I wouldn't mind getting a pizza delivered like this. Nice post

send onr of those threw chicago and see if it make it

thus far they've been tested in 12+ countries, many different areas. For example washington DC is one of the US cities it's been tested, in LA, texas and other regions. DC has similar crime rates in theft to that of chicago and yet it's been a successful program. California has also proved a successful market, despite it's crime difficulties. (see https://www.starship.xyz/starship-technologies-launches-testing-program-self-driving-delivery-robots-major-industry-partners/) 😊 They've gone over 400,000+ kms and I think the first thing anyone thought when they heard about this program was... what if it gets stolen? .. yet the program seems to be proving successful which explains the rapid expansion of it around the world. Theft happens all around the world, not just Chicago 👍

in la that stupid robot would never make its like a free pizza just rolling down the street. kick it over and take the pizza

it has already made it successfully and has a locking mechanism on it, as well as GPS so they can track whoever takes it.

and that stupid robot is taking some guys job

that's an easy assumption to make yet it can just as easily be a wrong one to make. As much research as there is out there to suggest robots are taking all the jobs and we need to live in fear, there is equal amount of publications supporting the contrary narrative. 😊 👍

Automation is going to replace so many jobs, I don't think people realize how big of an impact it will be.
