What the Neural Network Sees

in #technology5 years ago

I recently created a video for my sick, near death (probably) friend Jamie. I used another neural network to generate the images I put along with the neural network generated music.

But feel free to skip it altogether.

The images are interesting. I picked them out while the song was playing and created random images at ganbreeder.app. Every image you create there is "new". But they're definitely odd, almost inhuman. They might be the closest we've ever gotten to showing how other species view our own cultural imagery.

This one in particular was interesting in this light:

You can see that the neural network created something that kind of resembles a generic medical device. It might be blood pressure but it appears to have an ear piece. it's hard to say at first glance. The most interesting thing about it are the scribbles on the front. You can see that the neural network must have looked at hundreds of thousands of images with this sort of branding, names of hospitals, doctors, etc. So much so that it tried to essentially come up with a generic language of its own. And who knows it may even work as a language. I haven't studied it enough.

The AI is acutely aware that while we may write a bunch of scribbles in different configurations on our stuff it doesn't really mean anything.
