As for the current drones-era we are currently in, there are probably many who have walked around and wondered how it really feels like flying around with a Speeder Bike, an X-Wing or a Tie Fighter. But even if you are a Star Wars fan or not the mere sight of these Star Wars drones makes me ask the question: Why on earth did this not come to me when I was younger!?

The drone manufacturer Propel are (naturally) not slow to play on the geek strings of their audience when delivering this package. The package simply oozes Star Wars luxury, with little drones nicely set up on a display podium when unboxing. When we release them into the air, sound effects are played and it's hard not to crack a smile when nostalgic Star Wars sound effects starts to blast out of their little speakers.

Practice makes perfect

Try not to lose track of your drone, if you crash in some dense area you might have a hard time locating it.

The installation is otherwise very simple, but it does require some precise finger engineering. You first screw on the small propellers, and then you place two batteries into the remote control - whose battery cover you have to screw off with the associated screwdriver. Once everything is in place, simply sync the drone with the associated remote control by pulling the left lever up and down, and then initiate your take-off by holding down a button.

The first trials resulted in constant crashes. In fact, at first I did not even get the drones in the air. Even though we are a whole gang of friends testing the specimens we got our hands from our local tech-shop, but still none of us noticed that the screws on the propellers were in the wrong direction. Therefore, please read the instruction manual carefully before trying anything.

With that said, practice makes perfect and it does not take very long before we can fly around as we wish. That we are not talking about some super advanced drone though shows. The price tag is at a couple of hundred dollars per unit, and with that in mind, we should not complain too much that the transmitters are not reaching too far or lacking some of the more advanced drone features - including the ability to send out sounds from a crashed drone (which becomes a clear problem when we in an unfortunate moment manage to crash in a dense forest area).

Hard-to-find parts

Flying around doing aerial battles with little Tie-fighters is about as awesome as it sounds.

Other drawbacks are some of the more smaller details, such as that the propellers fly off easily if you hit the ground and are also translucent and hence difficult to locate. The drones also lack a power button, instead, we need to remove the battery every time we turn them off. They are also slightly unreliable when we try to hover, and the drone constantly wants to draw the controls towards one given side.

The big question, however, is how the Star Wars drones delivers in its air performance, and here we have no big things to complain about. They are easy to control, and also offers some entertaining extras that are sure to get Star Wars devotees to go running for one of these. Above all, we have a push button on the control that emits a small laser noise, which can be used to fight other Star Wars drones (up to 24 drones can fight at the same time). At the moment you can only fight with IR and the controller keeps track of the hits. The setup is simple: if you receive three hits, you are heading towards the ground. An app to visually view the status of fighters and other info (you attach your cellphone to a control clip) is underway, but there is not yet a release date for the app.

Via the control you can also perform various special moves, set the speed in three modes (maximum speed is of around 55 km / h) and launch a training mode, where you in peace and quiet can practice without risking embarrassing crashes.

Easter eggs for the fans

Propel SW Video Intro

So are the Star Wars drones worth a buy? Yes absolutely. This is a really playful product that maintains being joyful to use, and offers lots of beautiful Easter eggs for fans. There are a few minor things to complain about, but looking at the big picture, Propel has created one fun, nostalgic tech product.
