Is Artificial Intelligence a danger to Human Survival?

in #technology7 years ago

Dear Steemit Friends,

I'd like to talk about Artificial Intelligence and it's role in our lives. As we continue to make advancements and improvements in our technology, I can't help but to wonder if there is a danger that we may be becoming too reliant on our advancements and ignoring potential dangers that this progress could bring?

Artificial Intelligence has always been at the forefront of our advancements and the hope is that this technology not only simplifies our lives, but help us progress even further in our evolution. Some amazing things have been accomplished because of advances made in artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies and there are yet still more amazing things in development.

With all good things come a price, and in the case of AI, there are concerns and fears that the intelligence and independence that may be achieved by these advancements may lead to our inventions rising up against us and determining that we are no longer needed or a threat. Typically these are scenarios and plots of movies, however can be argued that there is some legitimacy to these concerns.

I recently read an article where Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook had a debate over the topic of Artificial Intelligence and it's potential danger to human survival. Elon Musk felt it was more dangerous then the threat of nuclear weapons. Zuckerberg felt differently and assumed it was irresponsible of Elon Musk to assume that AI was dangerous.

You can read the article here

What is ironic about this debate is that recently, researchers at Facebook had to shut down an AI they invented after it taught itself a new language. Apparently it was trained in English, however it had determined that the language was inefficient due to the various nuances and inconsistencies in the way different people speak and communicate. The AI decided to develop it's own language made up of code words to make communicating more efficient. What seemed like gibberish to the researches became a method for various AI systems to communicate with each other, making it very difficult for the researchers to understand what the systems were talking about or sharing with each other.

Two AI systems in particular named Bob and Alice completely abandoned the English language and started communicating with each other strictly using this new language that they had developed. Although researchers were able to identify some of the patterns the systems were using and able to decipher some of the conversation, it was not clear to them what the entire conversation was about.

Facebook ultimately shut the AI systems down, but will definitely continue it's research into AI in an effort to to make the world better - which is what Zuckerberg believes the goal is.

What are your thoughts on Artificial Intelligence - Are we creating something that will make our life better or ultimately end up inventing something that will end life as we know it?

As always, I appreciate your support. If you enjoyed this post, feel free to Follow, Upvote, Comment, and Resteem it and let me know what you think in the comments below.

love the story about the AI's learning their own language

I like this :D maybe make it into a gif.

It's crazy. Cool but crazy.

It is interesting that Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking have both said that AI is a major existential threat, but so are nuclear weapons and many other things. Of course, AI has many potential benefits. But we should be careful about how we proceed.

I agree. All technology and advancements have a positive and negative effect.

autonomous AI, That's pretty scary...

scary if left without ant control or supervision

i saw a robot tech, a humanoid that can walk like humans, imagine it with autonomous AI... really scary

Terminator!

AI in terms of IoT will definitely make our lives simpler and easier. It will revolutionize the way we do things - everyday stuff that we never thought could be done differently.

True. I think a little caution on the advancement is all we need. The technology though will lead to new discoveries and definitely an easier life

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Just like every other technological advance, the possible benefits outweigh the potential negatives

Yep but I think there is no stopping IoT its just a matter of regulating it so that the negative aspects are controlled.

I wouldn't say outweighs, but I do agree that the potential risks are negligible and can even be minimized if managed properly

Real intelligence requires the input of emotions and a living heart - thus AI will always be limited and tend towards psychopathy.

And that is what makes AI dangerous. It has no emotions, remorse, or feelings of guilt. It's actions are based on pure logic

Lack of emotions is the key issue, yes. It is important to understand though that guilt is not of use to anyone. Guilt is a form of fear that is afraid that you will be told again not to feel as you truly do. The absence of guilt and blame does not result in problems, rather it is a requirement of solving them.

Zuckerburg will definitely support AI development. In fact, because of his greed of money, he developed an AI with a main objective is to influence humans decision making interm of shopping and booking. Furthermore, this AI learn and evolve by themselve and has an ability to communicate to other AI using there own language. This will introduced to the masses embedded on facebook's first hardware using a free messaging cover up.

Therefore, we are facing a terminator like future.

I don't think there is a danger right now but eventually there will be. Just a matter of time. Right now we use AI for selecting TV shows and recommending things for us to buy, soon driving cars and automating our lifestyle but like all human creations we will use it for war. Teach it to harm other humans and eventually kill humans.

Yep. What is scary is we can set rules, but a simple magnetic current could erase those rules. Even a hacker or some virus.

What a coincidence we are on the same wavelength. I posted about AI today. I'll take some time to read your post tonight. Upvoted and followed.

Thanks. Great minds think alike :D

Ill check out your post as well.
