Disable Chrome "OMFG Close Everything" Shortcut
Did you know that Ctrl+Shift+Q
will close Chrome? Like for real close Chrome. Like close every tab in every window, Chrome is now closed, kinda close Chrome.
I'm a hotkey guru, I use shortcuts for everything whenever possible. As I'm browsing, I like to 'walk through' my tabs by hitting Ctrl+Tab
to go left to right, and Ctrl+Shift+Tab
to reverse direction. Notice that the only difference between these two commands is Q
and Tab
. Look at your keyboard and see how friendly they are with each other and you'll understand how big a problem this is.
If you're anything like me, all those tabs are filled with something that can fairly be described as work and with the press of three buttons hours of that work is gone.
Thankfully, there is a way to disable this and continue madly cycling through 37 tabs across 14 browser windows without fear of blowing up the world.
First, type chrome://extensions/
as the URL in Chrome. This brings up the list of installed extensions.
Scroll all the way to the bottom and find Keyboard shortcuts
Now, if you somehow don't have any extensions installed, head to the Chrome Store and find something basic to install.
Once you have an extension, click Keyboard shortcuts
and you'll see a menu all of your extensions.
Click into the box and it will say Type a shortcut
. Make sure it says that, otherwise you risk losing your work again, then you can type Ctrl+Shift+Q
and you'll see it in the menu. Click OK
and breath a sigh of relief.
Now, be sure to pick an extension that's not intrusive, otherwise you'll have just as disruptive a surprise when you accidentally type those keys again.
